Artist's Description
Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus (the mycobiont) and a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont), usually either a green alga (commonly Trebouxia) or cyanobacterium (commonly Nostoc). Lichens present a very intriguing problem for people whose job is to name different kinds of organisms. This is because a lichen is not a separate organism in the sense of being one type of individual. It is actually a close partnership between a fungus and an alga. The two types of organisms in the partnership are so closely interwoven that they appear as a single individual. This individual looks entirely different to either of the partner organisms making up the structure. Lichens are distinctive and they form many different, recognizable types. Many of these have been given specific names of their own, despite the fact that each lichen is already a mixture of different species.Lichens occur in some of the most extreme environments on E...
About Heiko Koehrer-Wagner
Welcome to our gallery. Our goal is to capture and show the beauty of our world in all its aspects. Therefore, our portfolio includes landscapes, plants, flower macros, wild mammals and birds such as the beautiful hummingbirds and the fantastic quetzals from Central America and insects as well as portraits of people from different countries that we visit on our travels. Focusing on the essentials - true to our motto "Less is More" - leads to a multitude of beautiful minimalist images. Water and its many facets, such as abstract reflections on the surface, powerful waves and spray of our oceans, rivers and waterfalls, tiny dew drops and bizarre forms of ice, is one of our favorite designs. With the colorful and mysterious world of lichens...

Amazing to find this out, now that is just across the Atantlic and up a bit, the same longitude area..I wonder if that particular lichen pattern is common in other places, some time I might look into that, the formation was so appealing

Did you happen to shoot these on the coast of Maine by Two lights? I saw lichen like this there and used it to create my piece in the Rock God Series called Lichen Lords and Ladies. I love this photo you took, I was so enthralled by this formation of lichen. This is a nice clear and colorful photograph
Heiko Koehrer-Wagner replied:
Nany: This lichen, like almost all of my Lichen Pattern series pictures I captured during a three month travel in northern Norway, in the Polar region. This one was taken at about noon (or what do you mean with Two lights?). I love the forms and colors of lichens. I enjoyed your nice compliments. Thank you.
